What is Domain Typo Detection?

How we catch gmial.com, yaho.com, and other mistyped email domains.

Domain typo detection identifies email addresses where the domain looks like a mistyped version of a known email provider — for example, gmial.com instead of gmail.com.

How it works

We check every domain against two lists:

  1. Direct typo map — 30+ confirmed common typos (gmial.com → gmail.com, yaho.com → yahoo.com, hotmai.com → hotmail.com). Detected instantly.
  1. Distance-based detection — for domains not in the direct map, we calculate the normalised edit distance between the domain and every known provider domain. If the distance is under 25% and the corrected domain is a known provider, we flag it as a possible typo.

What we show

When a typo is detected:

  • is_possible_domain_typo: true
  • suggested_domain: gmail.com (or whichever correction applies)
  • Status: Risky, Send recommendation: Review

Intra-list cross-referencing

When validating a full list, we cross-reference domains against other domains in the same list. If acmecorp.com appears frequently as a valid domain but acmecarp.com appears once, we'll suggest acmecorp.com as the correction — even if it's not a known public provider.

What to do with typo detections

Contact the person and ask them to confirm or correct their email. Do not automatically send to the suggested correction — you don't know for certain which was intended.
